Cecil Lochkart, 95-year-old from West Virginia becomes the oldest organ donor in US history

Cecil Lockhart, 95-year-old man from Welch, West Virginia donated his liver and became the oldest organ donor in the United States on May 4, 2021. Lockhart served as a corporal in the US Army during World War II and was a coal miner for more than 50 years.

Aksano breathes his last on the eve of his birthday, mother and sisters decide to donate his organs

Aksano, a 22-year-old boy from Kerala gave a new lease of life to five people on the eve of his birthday. He met with an accident near Kochu, Kodungalloor temple in Kollam and was rushed to Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH), Kollam where he was declared brain-dead. Mary, his mother, Josephine and Cincy, his sisters decided to donate his organs.

A 13-year-old boy from Keonjhar in Odisha becomes the youngest heart recipient in East India.

A 13-year-old boy from Keonjhar in Odisha became the youngest patient to receive a heart in eastern India. He underwent a successful heart transplant surgery at Narayana Super Specialty Hospital, Howrah. The transplant was possible because the family of Basudeb Das Adhikari decided to donate his organs after he was declared brain-dead at Apollo Gleneagles Hospital, Kolkata.

First-ever live cornea donation in Spain

Juan Ramon Jimenez Hospital in Huelva, Spain registered an incredible medical milestone when a patient's living cornea was donated to the tissue bank. The patient's eye tissue had to be removed for medical reasons. Mostly donated tissues are taken from deceased persons but this donation of a cornea from a living person is unique.

22-year-old girl from Agra declared brain-dead at a private hospital in Delhi but organ donation without autopsy was barred

A 22-year-old girl from Agra developed serious neurological complications after taking Covishield vaccine. She was referred to Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, Delhi where despite all efforts she was declared brain-dead.

Family was willing to donate organs but the National Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organization (NOTTO) insisted that a post-mortem examination was needed to rule out if or not the complications were caused due to vaccination.

Can a deceased donor's family decide whom the donated organ should go to

A 24-year-old man's family, who was declared brain-dead at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Saket, Delhi wanted to donate his organs but the donation did not happen as the family wanted the deceased's liver to be given to a relative in their family who was suffering from liver failure. The existing laws do not allow 'directed donation' in case of a deceased donor.
